TDOT Transportation Update

Below are three news releases distributed from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation on three ongoing road work projects in the City of Tucson.

GOLF LINKS ROAD/KOLB ROAD
INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

On Sunday, July 24, 2011, work crews will be installing new
55-foot-tall traffic signal mast arms on each corner of the Golf Links
Road and Kolb Road intersection.  Crews will be working from 5 a.m. to 4
p.m. Periodic lane closures will be in place at the intersection during
this work. Tucson Police officers will be present to direct traffic
during the work.

The Golf Links Road and Kolb Road Intersection Improvement Project
began in April 2011. The improvements include widening the existing
intersection to provide dual left turn lanes in all directions, new
six-foot-wide sidewalks, a bus pull through at the northeast and
southeast corners of the intersection and a bus pullout at the northwest
corner of the intersection. The construction cost of the project is $2.3
million and the improvements are being funded with the voter-approved
Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).

The project is scheduled to be complete in late September 2011.  For
more information and for regular project updates please visit the
project website at http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/project/golf-links-kolb-road

The voter-approved, $2.1 billion RTA plan will be implemented through
2026. Details about the full plan are available at www.RTAmobility.com.
The RTA has a nine-member board with representatives from local, state
and tribal governments. While funded through the RTA, the above projects
will be managed by TDOT.

The Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) keeps Tucson moving
smoothly and safely. The Department’s nearly 250 employees oversee the
maintenance and reconstruction of nearly 1,900 miles of streets and are
responsible for hundreds of drainage structures, public art pieces,
street lights and signs, and traffic signs and signals in Tucson. TDOT
also operates the City’s transit services, Sun Tran and Sun Van.

GRANT ROAD AND ORACLE ROAD
INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Arizona Pipeline, under contract with Southwest Gas Co., has begun
utility relocation work in preparation for the start of the Grant Road
and Oracle Road Intersection Improvement project. The relocation work is
currently taking place on Grant Road at 15th Avenue.

Travel lane restrictions are in place on the south side of Grant Road
in the curb lane and middle lane. Work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.  Some night work and weekend work will be
required when crews are installing new lines across Grant Road at 15th
Avenue. This work is scheduled to be complete in about two weeks.

The Grant Road and Oracle Road Intersection Improvement project is
scheduled to begin in early Fall 2011.

This intersection improvement project is the first of many projects the
Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) has planned along the Grant
Road Corridor.

The Grant Road Improvement Project is managed by the City of Tucson and
funded by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). The improvement
of Grant Road is one of the projects approved by voters in May 2006 as
part of the RTA plan.

SIXTH STREET CLOSURE NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

To accommodate work crews constructing the new video scoreboard at the
south end zone of Arizona Stadium, Sixth Street will be closed to
through travel from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 and
possibly Sunday, July 24, 2011.  Work crews will be painting the video
scoreboard columns. Sixth Street will be closed so that the paint will
not overspray onto passing cars.

The work is scheduled to be complete in one day, but in the event of
inclement weather on Saturday, crews may need to complete the work on
Sunday. Sixth Street will reopen when crews complete the work.

Electronic message boards are in place to alert motorists of this
closure. Motorists should use Speedway Boulevard or Broadway as
alternative travel routes. Visitors to Sixth Street businesses and the
University will be detoured through campus, around the construction
area.

Work to install the new video scoreboard began on May 15, 2011. Over
the past two months, work crews have installed concrete caisson
foundations 45 feet deep just south of Arizona Stadium and have
installed 55-foot-tall steel pipe columns and structures that will
support the video scoreboard.

The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or
walking in this work area.  Business access will be maintained.  For
your safety, please observe all traffic control signage, message boards,
and obey reduced speed limits.  Watch for construction personnel and
equipment in the work zone.
