Sun Tran is offering free shuttle service to the memorial event to honor the victims of the recent mass shooting in Tucson, which will be held at the University of Arizona’s McKale Center on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011. Shuttle service will begin at 2 p.m., with the last shuttle departing for McKale Center at 5:30 p.m. Return service to the original boarding locations will be provided at the conclusion of the memorial service.

Passengers can park and ride for free from:
• El Con Mall – Located at 3601 E. Broadway Blvd. Park in the northeast lot, just east of Dodge Blvd.
• Hi Corbett Field – Located on 22nd Street and Randolph Way. Park on the east side of the baseball field.
“As we come together as a community, I am so proud of the Sun Tran and Sun Van employees, including staff represented by Teamsters Local 104, who have offered to volunteer their time to provide free transportation to this important event,” said Katrina Heineking, general manager of Sun Tran and Sun Van.
Andy Marshall, Teamsters 104 Principal Executive Officer added, “We realize Tucsonans need to heal from this tragic event, and we’re humbled by the opportunity to volunteer for our neighbors during this difficult time.”
Buses to Honor Victims
On Wednesday, Jan. 12, all Sun Tran, Sun Van and Sun Shuttle transit vehicles will drive with their headlights on to honor the victims of the recent tragedy in Tucson.
To offer our support to the victims and their families, destination signs on Sun Tran buses will read, Together We Thrive to echo the theme of the memorial event held in honor of the victims.
“This gesture represents the thoughts and prayers of our region’s transit employees,” added Ms. Heineking.
Sun Tran Detours and Delays
Sun Tran routes serving the University of Arizona will experience detours due to the closure of the UA Mall at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12. This closure is to accommodate the expected increased traffic volumes caused by the memorial service at McKale Center. Passengers are asked to be patient as additional routes throughout the system may experience delays.
