Bring Back the Splash Honored

My office has received word that Bring Back the Splash, has been selected as a finalist in the category of Community Building for this year's Metropolitan Pima Alliance's (MPA) Common Ground Awards on November 30th.

I want thank Rick Stertz, Doug Martin, Crissy Perham for their work on Bring Back the Splash, as well as John Sefton of Parks and Rec for his work on this effort, which raised $100,000 and opened six city pools that had been closed due to budget cuts.

Bring Back the Splash, wasn't just about a fund raising effort. This was to have the private and public sectors working together for the community. In addition, through my proposal and vote by the Mayor and Council, lifted a 25 year old restriction on Parks and Recreation soliciting advertising and sponsorships. This brought a new idea and approach to the table.

KIDCO TEAM MEMBER WINS 50/50 RAFFLE TO SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Tucson Parks Foundation hosted the Second Annual Night at the
Ballpark on Wednesday, July 18th. It was a great success, rising almost
$2,000 for the Tucson Parks and Recreation KIDCO program.  That is
$1,400 more than was raised the previous year. The foundation, parks and
recreation staff, board members and community really came together to
support a great cause.

Each KIDCO participant, which is almost 1,500 children, was given a
free ticket to the game. Over 330 tickets were sold in advance for a
discounted price of $4 and a 50/50 raffle was held throughout the first
7 innings. The 50/50 raffle raised $922 with a prize of $461 going to
KIDCO employee Danika Knight. She had only purchased a single ticket for
$1 and stated that she was “shocked, it was luck of the draw” when
they called out the winning numbers.

Danika, who has been an employee of the KIDCO program for the past two
summers, gave $200 of her winnings back to the Tucson Parks Foundation
and KIDCO without hesitation. “I didn’t even think about it, they
handed me the money and I immediately handed them $200 back,” says
Knight. She selflessly felt as though she had only invested a dollar and
did not deserve the money. Danika also gave portions of the winnings to
the foundation where her sorority donates and her church, only saving
$75 for herself. “I was trying to disperse it because I didn’t feel
like I rightfully deserved it and since this event was for KIDCO I
wanted to give them the biggest chunk back,” stated Knight.

Danika is a 21-year-old Speech Pathology student at Northern Arizona
University (NAU) and will graduate next May then move on to graduate
school. She hopes to work for the Tucson Parks and Recreation KIDCO
Summer program for as long as her schedule will allow. Her favorite part
about her job is getting to know and work with the kids. She said it
“keeps her on her toes.”

A Special thanks to our sponsors Pyramid Federal Credit Union, who
provided the funds for the Padres fees and Alphagraphics, who provided
the printing of the tickets for free. To donate to the Tucson Parks
Foundation please visit www.TucsonParks.org.

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a highway improvement project aimed at increasing driver visibility and safety by removing vegetation, including bushes and trees, from the median of Interstate 19 on Monday, July 30.

Crews will remove vegetation in the median within 30 feet of the interstate from approximately three miles south of Continental Road in Green Valley to the Border Patrol Station on I-19 near Rio Rico. The project , which is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 8, will enhance road safety and prevent pavement damage.

  • Traffic will be narrowed to one lane intermittently during work hours. Lane closures will alternate as work continues along the project area.
  • Drivers can expect delays of up to five minutes.

The schedule is subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, availability of materials, and mechanical difficulties. ADOT advises drivers to proceed through or near work zones with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

AOP Facility Groundbreaking

Tucson Water officials and special guests broke ground this morning on
an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) water treatment facility. The new
facility will remove 1,4-dioxane from the groundwater in the Tucson
Airport Remediation Project (TARP) well field in southwest Tucson. The
AOP treatment facility will cost approximately $15 million to
construct and will be a part of the TARP facility near Irvington Road west of
I-19. Completion of the new facility is expected by fall 2013. The
cost to construct the AOP facility is included in Tucson Water’s long range
capital plan.

New Tucson Water Director Alan Forrest hosted the groundbreaking
ceremony, which included Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, City
Council Member Richard Fimbres (Ward 5), Tucson City Manager, Richard Miranda,
and Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias (District 5).
“This facility is an important investment in our community’s water
quality and reliability,” said Mayor Rothschild. “Tucson Water’s
commitment to customers to make sure we have enough quality water for
today and the future is a strategic approach that we fully support.”

1,4-Dioxane was used as a stabilizer in industrial solvents in
aircraft manufacturing facilities from the 1940s to the 1970s and has been
found in groundwater at the TARP well field. The TARP facility has been in
operation since 1994, and was designed to remove another compound,
Trichloroethylene (TCE). The TARP facility was not designed to remove
1,4-dioxane. The 4500 square-foot AOP Facility will be constructed
adjacent to the TARP Plant.

AOP is a cost effective and leading technology that combines hydrogen
peroxide with ultraviolet (UV) light to create a strong oxidant that
removes 1,4-dioxane and other contaminants from water. Using the new
AOP treatment facility and the existing TARP treatment plant, Tucson Water
will purify 8 million gallons of water daily.

The AOP treatment facility is a pro-active approach on behalf of the
City of Tucson and Tucson Water to respond to the Environmental
Protection Agency’s (EPA) health advisory levels. The EPA does not
currently regulate 1,4-dioxane but does issue advisories as guidelines
for water utilities. In January, 2011, the EPA issued a new drinking
water health advisory for 1,4-dioxane of 0.35 parts per billion
-significantly lower than the most recent advisory level of 3 parts
per billion.

Tucson Water Director Forrest pointed out that the water produced now
from the TARP facility meets all federal drinking water standards and
is safe for drinking, cooking, and bathing. However, the current method
of blending water from uncontaminated sources with water from the TARP
plant is not sustainable over the long term, thus the need for the new
AOP facility. Tucson Water regularly takes samples at a number of
sites in the area where water from the TARP facility is delivered to ensure
complete safety.

Streetcar Update

With streetcar tracks in place and Fourth Avenue receiving its final
layer of pavement between Sixth Street and University Boulevard, the Sun
Link Tucson Streetcar project will reach a construction milestone on
Saturday, July 14, 2012.

“With Old Pueblo Trackworks completing the final paving, and the
construction fencing coming down, we will have hit a milestone when we
reopen a portion of the roadway to traffic on Saturday,” said Jesse
Gutierrez, City of Tucson’s Construction Manager for the Sun Link
Tucson Streetcar Project.  “I want to thank the area businesses and
the traveling public for their patience during this phase of this
important project.”

Gutierrez also reminds bicyclists riding on this re-opened section be
aware of the new location of the track, and to cross tracks with care on
the perpendicular.

According to Gutierrez this portion of Fourth Avenue is the first
section of the streetcar construction project to be significantly
complete with next steps including the installation of overhead poles,
streetcar stops, and the overhead electrical system. Construction began
in early April 2012.

“I want to applaud the efforts of the Sun Link Streetcar team for
working so diligently to complete this portion of the project,” said
U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva. “For a long time we have talked about the
importance of the streetcar project for Tucson’s economic development
and the number of jobs created. I am pleased to work with the City of
Tucson on the remaining phases for a successful and timely
completion.”

City of Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said, “There are 500
construction jobs related to Sun Link construction - our city’s
largest construction project to date. Crews are working long shifts to
meet tight deadlines so that service can launch late 2013.”

“The Sun Link streetcar has generated $400 million in private
investment to date. When complete, it will be an exciting green transit
option that will connect communities and improve the quality of life for
our region,” according Satish Hiremath, Mayor of Oro Valley and the
chair of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Board.

On Monday, July 16, 2012, Fourth Avenue between Ninth and Sixth
Streets, will be closed for construction as crews continue working south
on Fourth Avenue on track installation.  Gutierrez said that most of the
preliminary underground utility work in this section was complete with
other area city projects so streetcar-related construction will be
complete well in advance of the Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair in
December.

progress, access, and parking. Website visitors can also sign up to

Tucson Water Update

Tucson Water Names New Director

In June, Tucson Water named a new Director, Alan Forrest. Mr. Forrest
brings 27 years of experience in public utility operations and
management to Tucson Water employees and customers. His professional
career began at Tucson Water in 1985. He gained additional experience
at three area water utilities. Most recently, Mr. Forrest served as
Vice President and Area Manager for the Tucson office of a Fortune 500
consulting and engineering firm.

As the new Director of Tucson Water, Mr. Forrest will work to ensure
that we deliver quality water with a high level of customer service,
making Tucson Water one of the finest water utilities in the nation.

Tucson Water Set to Break Ground on AOP Plant

On Wednesday, July 18, Tucson Water will break ground on a new
Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) Water Treatment Plant adjacent to the
Tucson Airport Remediation Plant (TARP). The AOP facility will employ
some of the most sophisticated technology available to ensure that
Tucson Water customers receive clean, high-quality water well into the
future.

The AOP filtration method will work in conjunction with the TARP to
efficiently and safely remove organic and some inorganic materials,
delivering approximately 8 million gallons of purified water a day.
The addition of the AOP Plant means that Tucson Water will continue to
be able to provide drinking water that meets or exceeds current
quality standards. The construction of a new AOP Plant is one of the
ways Tucson Water invests in infrastructure that ensures water
reliability for current residents and future generations.

Reclaimed Water – A Recycled Resource

Tucson Water’s reclaimed water system is one of the nation’s largest
and oldest. Tucson was one of the first communities in the U.S. to
begin recycling wastewater for irrigation. Today, nearly all the golf
courses, parks and schoolyards in our service area keep their turf
green with reclaimed water instead of precious drinking water. Look
for the reclaimed water signs to see where our water recycling is at
work.
